Giant Asian Mantis

The Giant Asian Mantis(Hierodula membranacea) is one of the most common of the mantis species kept as pets.

Its large size and the relative ease of keeping is a big factor to its popularity.
The Giant Asian Mantis has its natural habitat in Asia.

Appearance/look

The color of the Giant Asian Mantis can usually be green, but there are also yellow, beige and brown tones as well.

The beige individuals can even look rose/pinkish. The difference in color is more likely a response to the environment in which the animal is kept.

I believe some mantids can change with high humidity environments and greener vegetation to lively green/emerald hues to mimic living vegetation and the opposite can happen in drier seasons and decaying plants go Yellow-Brown in color to blend.

Hierodula membranacea is known to be one of the largest mantis species that can be successfully kept in captivity. Adult females can range from 3.5-4 inches long and the males are a little smaller around 3-3.25 inches. The males are also thinner and lighter than the females. The wings of a male extend just past the abdomen, adult females are bigger and bulkier with wings that extend just to the abdomen.

Behavior of the Giant Asian Mantis

Hierodula membranacea is very prey aggressive, These will actively hunt its prey once locked on. They have been known in my groups to pounce/dive on prey. Large prey insects do not scare a Giant Asian Mantis, it will attack anything half its own body size or smaller. They can be hand tamed and handled easily.

Feeding

Giant Asian Mantises are not picky eaters, they will eat almost anything. When adult they can easily grab adult crickets, adult locusts and bigger cockroaches. L1 nymphs are fine with fruit flies and will eat small crickets, flies and young grasshoppers while growing.

Environmental conditions and housing for this species

The ideal temperature for Hierodula membranacea is about 75°-80°F, At night it can be cooler at night between 65°-70°F
This species does not have high demands concerning humidity, but it is important to spray with water every other day for a drink. Air humidity should be about 40-65%. Higher air humidity is a leading cause of death for any mantis but these especially!
As with all species of praying mantis, this species needs a cage that is at least 3× the length of the animal is long, and at least 2× the width of the mantid. For adult mantids this means is a minimum 10.5 in. height and 7.5 in. width. A nice size for a terrarium would be 12in. × 8in. × 12in., so there is room for plants and perches.
